This client was a successful, profitable electrical wholesale business who unfortunately had a sister Company on whom it was reliant for supply of product but that was operating at a loss and draining money from the parent Company.
The initial challenge was to implement a sales & marketing strategy to attract new business to at least a breakeven level as soon as possible. However, several obstacles were quickly identified that would hinder growth and needed correction before proceeding.
What NGBA did:
It was important to introduce a more disciplined management structure to both businesses. Key systems and procedures were put in place to provide a logical procedure when quoting for new projects and ensuring accurate costing. Suitable members of staff were identified to take added responsibility and form a management team. This allowed time for the owner to work on his business rather than in it. Suitable KPI’s were identified and introduced to manage and measure performance with extremely positive results on production, downtime & waste. With the help of my HR colleague we also introduced new contracts of employment and a company handbook which had a dramatic effect on attendance and productivity. We were then able to concentrate on building sales at a lean fabrication business.
We were able to attract several new clients to provide lucrative business, doubling the turnover and delivering a profitable Company. The parent Company also felt the benefit of the business improvement process and increased turnover improving profitability and establishing a stable and positive work place with well trained and loyal staff. Importantly we also resolved the cash drain issue with the fabrication business earning profits for the first time and the parent Company benefitting from not only the removal of the need to cover the previous losses but enjoying increased profits themselves.
